How to Break into Quant Finance from Statistics and Data Analysis

Introduction

Welcome to The Quant Guide. Designed by a team of actual quants, we provide the world’s #1 quant trading and research interview preparation program — from resume development, to teaching all the required interview concepts, to providing you with a 500+ actual interview question bank, we teach you everything from how to get interviews and then how to crush them.

In this post, we’re discussing how to make the jump to Quant Trading, Quant Research, and Quant Analyst roles at High Frequency Trading (HFT) firms and Hedge Funds, given that you have some experience (or just an interest!) in Data Analytics (Analysis), Data Science, and Statistics. Firms that our students have recieved offers form include: Jane Street, Citadel, Hudson River Trading, Jump Trading, DRW, IMC, SIG, Two Sigma, DE Shaw, Tower Research, Goldman Sachs, Akuna Capital, Optiver, and more.

The Quant Finance, HFT, Hedge Fund Landscape

Quantitative trading and research involves using mathematical models and computational algorithms to analyze financial markets and make trading decisions. It requires an understanding of statistics, probability, programming, and (once you get the job!) financial markets. Professionals in this field leverage data analysis techniques to identify trading opportunities and manage risks effectively. Today, HFT firms and hedge funds hire students with experience in data analytics and data science because these skills translate well to being able to find insights from financial models and build tools that efficiently display important market indicators.

The Perfect Quant Finance Resume

Getting the attention of recruiters, hiring managers, and senior quants is hard. Quant firms (HFT firms and hedge fund) are not going to be impressed by just a resume with some statistics or data analytics experience. They are looking for people who have the data analytics + statistics knowledge, a strong risk-taking intuition, and an interest in testing the markets.

In Quant Blueprint's Flagship Quant Finance Interview Preparation Program, we’ll be teaching you exactly what skills and projects you need to add to your resume so that it is a shoe in for what recruiters and hiring managers at top firms are looking for. We’ll be giving you a suite of projects to choose from — with regards to specific trading strategies, portfolio optimization, risk-management tools, high-frequency trading simulations, and more. We’ll be adding specific, involved projects to your resume that will cover the bases of all the skills that quant firms want. In addition, we’ll be restructuring and re-marketing existing content on your resume so that it lines up with what recruiters at quant firms are looking for. By the time you get through the resume-building part of the course, your resume will much stronger than others who applying for the same job (your competition).

Alongside this, we’re going to have you use our suggested methods to get directly in touch with recruiters, hiring-managers, lead quants, and portfolio managers so that you can maximize your shot of getting interviews at every firm. The goal of the program is to systematically strengthen your profile, and then shoot your resume over to hundreds of firms (and thus thousands of unique teams).

Acing The Quant Trading and Research Interview

Passing quant trading and quant research interviews is not easy. Interviews are testing your fundamental understanding of concepts such as probability, betting/strategy, expected-value, market-making, and more. Here’s a sample interview question you’ll see:

Say we have a 30-sided die, and this game involves 2 players, A and B. A will choose their number first, and then B will choose a different number. Now we’re going to roll the die. Whoever chooses a number which is closer to the number that the die rolls will win the amount of money that the die rolled. Would you like to be player A or player B, and how will you decide the number you’ll pick as player A?

To see the solution to this question (and a more complex one later!) view this video published by our team: https://youtu.be/3agR1a0ACeY?si=w1pDYZA6LXn93xYd

You’re going to have to learn to answer questions such as these, and more involved probability questions. These questions are designed to test your problem solving skills, probability and risk-taking intuition, and see how quickly you can make decisions that are grounded in the likelihood of events.

In The Quant Guide’s interview preparation part of the course, you’re going to:

  • develop a very strong understanding of the theory behind all of these concepts
  • learn exactly how to apply the fundamentals to a risk-taking setting geared towards crushing interview questions
  • become an expert on exactly what to say in interviews so that it becomes clear that you’re already thinking like a quant
  • practice from our hundreds of actual interview questions

This is not an easy course, but it teaches you everything needed from start to end to crush quant finance interviews. Students who just do some online practice questions/books do not have the intuition needed to do well on these interviews. The purpose of the guide is to give you a major leg up over others, which is what matters in quant finance interviews.

Practicing for Interviews the Right Way

Once you get through the lectures and material in The Quant Guide’s course, you’re going to need to spend time getting through our 500+ Actual Interview Question Bank. This is a list of interview questions that have been asked at quant firms, as recently as last week. This is the most accurate and comprehensive question bank available, and will take time to get through.

It’s not going to be easy, but once you get through the questions and read the thorough solutions teaching you how to break down the complex concepts, you’re going to be in an incredibly good spot when it comes to interview readiness. After getting through the program, our students end up with an immense edge over other candidates — this lends itself to offers at firms including Jane Street, Citadel, Hudson River Trading, Jump Trading, DRW, IMC, SIG, Two Sigma, and more (the list goes on!).
